Fast, Flexible Ground Investigation with the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer. Gain instant insights into your soil strength without the need for heavy machinery. We provide rapid, reliable DCP test solutions with portable hand-operated equipment to keep your project moving.

Need to Know What Lies Beneath?

Before you lay a foundation or pave a road, you need to know if the ground has the required bearing capacity. But you don’t always need a massive drilling rig or costly equipment to determine this. Sometimes, the most efficient method is also the simplest, using a manually operated dynamic cone penetrometer.

At CBR Testing STS, we specialise in Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing, including the use of the TRL dynamic cone penetrometer for reliable, in situ analysis. Our portable, robust equipment is perfect for obtaining continuous measurements and penetration depth data on tight access sites, road pavement layers, and unbound materials. You get the data, including penetration rate, resistance, and CBR values, needed for accurate pavement design or foundation selection, all without turning your site into a mud bath. Our experienced team brings the expertise and the muscle to deliver accurate results that engineers and building control officers trust.

What is a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Test?

Think of it as a strength test for the Earth. The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer is a lightweight, portable device and a prime example of efficient soil investigation equipment. It consists of a metal cone connected to a penetration rod, a vertical scale for depth readings, and an impact anvil. The instrument is manually operated by driving the cone into the ground with a standardised falling weight (hammer) dropped from a set height (free fall). Each blow advances the cone, and the penetration rate is recorded at each depth increment.

The test parameters, number of blows, penetration depth per blow, and soil resistance, are all measured and obtained as the procedure is performed. These readings are correlated with California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values, providing swift estimates of sub-grade stiffness and supporting pavement design decisions. The DCP test is a standard method for profiling soils and assessing the structural properties of ground layers compared to heavier equipment.

Our DCP Testing Services

We use this versatile device to solve a variety of site challenges, delivering test data that meets industry expectations.

1. Quick CBR Estimation

DCP tests are widely used to get an on-site estimate of CBR values, which is a big deal for road pavement layers and foundation design. The beauty of the DCP method is that it’s fast, so you get those CBR values on site, saving you both time and money compared to sending them to a lab.

  • Roads & Pavements: Super useful for checking the stiffness of the sub-grade and how thick the sub-base materials are before you lay them. The measurements give you a direct handle on how the unbound materials will perform, and that’s essential for any pavement design.
  • Foundation Checks: Verifies the ground bearing capacity so your engineer can take real-world conditions into account, exactly where and how deep.

2. Profiling Soil Layers

Because we’re recording measurements at set depth intervals (usually every 10mm or per hit), the dynamic cone penetrometer lets us build up a clear picture of what’s going on beneath the surface.

  • Find the Weak Spots: Instantly identify where the ground is weak or varies beneath a harder crust using our reliable method.
  • Layer Thickness: Figure out exactly how deep any fill or imported materials go before they hit the natural ground, using the correlated DCP readings.

3. Verification of Compaction

Have you got enough compaction in your fill? DCP penetration is a super efficient way to evaluate compaction and confirm that earthworks have got the stiffness and strength you need, reducing the risk of future settlement or failure.

Why Choose DCP Testing?

The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer isn’t just a fancy metal rod; it’s a proven, cost-effective method and a project saver.

  • Access Anywhere: Our device is designed as portable hand-operated equipment, enabling full testing in basements, rear gardens, steep slopes, or narrow trenches where heavy vehicles can’t reach.
  • Minimal Disturbance: The TRL dynamic cone leaves a hole only approx. the same diameter as the rod, barely wider than a finger, so your site stays tidy.
  • Rapid Results: Perform multiple DCP tests in a single day, with each test providing measurements and readouts that account for multiple layers and depths quickly.
  • Cost-Effective: Lower equipment stock and mobilisation costs. No heavy plant, no fuel surcharge, and no waiting weeks for lab results, just efficient ground investigation.

Why Work With CBR Testing STS?

We’re all about delivering precision, innovation and a practical attitude.

  • Tech-Savvy Staff: Our team can read and interpret results on the go, spotting any anomalies that a device alone might miss. All the readings and results are recorded and linked to your project.
  • Clear Reporting: We convert all the blow counts and penetration rates into easy-to-understand charts, vertical scales and CBR values. All the data is carefully correlated and 100% compliant with UK standards.
  • Nationwide Coverage: wherever you are, city centre or out in the sticks, we’ve got the gear and the team ready to roll out at a moment’s notice.
  • Fast Turnaround: we get moving ASAP we know your project’s on hold pending our input – like pouring concrete or laying tarmac, so we’ve streamlined the process to get the “green light” to you as soon as humanly possible.

Stop Guessing, Start Testing

Ground conditions are a mystery, hidden layers are a nightmare and variable compaction is just one of those variables that can grind your build to a halt or muck up your pavement design. With our Dynamic Cone Penetrometer services, backed by top-of-the-line gear, old-school expertise and a thorough analysis, you get the solid facts you need to move forward with confidence.
